This Pride Month, I find myself reflecting deeply on what it means to be proud. Having pride in oneself isn't always easy. Whether you're from the LGBTQIA+ community or another culture or community; it can be a profound challenge when faced with unaccepting family members, societal prejudice, and the gnawing presence of self-doubt. Many individuals struggle to embrace their true identities amidst criticism and rejection from those closest to them, making the journey to self-acceptance even more daunting. Society's rigid norms and discriminatory attitudes can often lead to feelings of isolation and inadequacy.
Despite these obstacles, it is crucial to continue fighting every day to recognize and celebrate your own value. This relentless pursuit of self-worth and authenticity is an act of courage and defiance, and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. By honoring your true self, you not only affirm your own existence but also pave the way for a more accepting and inclusive world.
I find myself especially moved by the power of authenticity and the importance of pride within the LGBTQIA+ community. Being proud is a journey of self-discovery and acceptance. To be proud means embracing every facet of your identity with courage and joy. It’s about showing the world your true colors, unfiltered and unashamed, and finding beauty in every hue. From the subtle shades of vulnerability to the vibrant tones of confidence, each person's journey is a masterpiece deserving of recognition and celebration.
To be proud is to stand tall in your truth, to honor the unique journey that has shaped who you are today. For the LGBTQIA+ community, Pride Month is a powerful affirmation of identity, love, and resilience. It’s a time to celebrate the courage it takes to live openly and authentically, despite the challenges and prejudices that might arise. Showing one's true colors means embracing every shade of your identity with joy, knowing that you are a masterpiece in progress. I hold a lot of admiration, respect, and love for the LGBTQIA+ community and have personally been inspired by many individuals from this community. It takes a lot of bravery to stand in your full truth; bravery that many who ridicule this community have yet to possess.
As a photographer, my role extends beyond the lens. The essence of capturing moments lies in revealing the authentic stories of the individuals I photograph. There is a kaleidoscope of stories, colors, and emotions. It is about celebration, recognition, and the unwavering belief in the beauty of each person's true colors. It’s about actively listening, learning, and amplifying my client’s voice, message, persona and inner beauty. It’s about ensuring that every person in front of my lens feels seen and valued.
This June, I encourage you to celebrate yourself and those around you. Show your true colors, whether through vibrant attire, expressive art, or simply by being unapologetically you. Consider stepping in front of the camera and embracing the magic of a photoshoot. It’s about the experience of being celebrated and seen. It’s a moment to honor your journey, to reflect on your growth, and to radiate the confidence that comes from self-acceptance. It's something profoundly rewarding about capturing your essence during Pride Month—a visual declaration to the world that you are proud of who you are!
Whether you’re part of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally, let this month be a time to shine brightly, to love fiercely, and to show the world that pride is a beautiful, powerful thing. So, let’s step into the light, together, and capture the true colors that make us who we are.
